Well, I've enjoyed reading other peoples stories as they travelled on their own trips of a lifetime and I wanted to do the same - so hope you enjoy the trip as I try and share through my eyes!

Monday

Trial Bay and SouthWest Rocks

SUNDAY 11th JUNE

Unfortunately, all good things come to an end and so my sojourn here had also come to an end. The trip to the airport was uneventful, although I had to leave the first Australia vs England RU test at half time to catch the cab. At that point, we’d looked quite good, so you can imagine my surprise when I caught the score and Australia had humped us. I’m becoming embarrassed to admit being a follower of English Rugby – it’s becoming like the cricket!

The flight back was uneventful with the exception of a massive thunderstorm that we flew through about 2 hours south of Bangkok – the storm clouds rose on three sides around the plane, with the right hand side of the ‘square’ empty, so it appeared as if we flew through the centre of the 3-sided square formed! Within the clouds, the lightening cracked and flashed, travelling from the bottom layer across, up the side and exploding in the cloud layer above us. I asked to go up to the cockpit to see the storm, but needless to say, the backward twats that did the twin towers ruined any chance I had! I did consider pleading that I was an honest Christian, Guv, but then so is Bush Jnr and he’s the biggest danger to World Peace on the planet so I figured I was thwarted! It seemed like I was looking onto some smoke or mist shrouded blacksmiths, or even welding bays – when we are able to tap a storm’s power – we’ll be well in – hopefully we’ll have more than just capacitors to store the excess charge!

Coming into Oz, I was disturbed to see that the whole coastline appeared covered by clouds so lo-and-behold, on landing, rain and bad weather everywhere! Bugger – how much can change in 11 days huh.

Anyway, the next task was a swift scoot to Trial Bay / SouthWest rocks, which I reached Tuesday morning….. and the sun was out – hurrah.

Trial Bay was so called for the experimental penal colony based there that was designed to help those convicts nearing the end of their sentences to learn a trade, save some money and be integrated back into the community. Despite the fact that apparently not one of the discharged convicts re-offended, the scheme was deemed a failure, presumably on account of the breakwater that wasn’t completed to shelter the bay.

The jail made a brief renaissance during WW2 – when ze Germins and other ‘undesirables’ were incarcerated there but following the War, the jail has lapsed to it’s current state.

Situated on a bluff overlooking the bay, the spot has some wonderful views out into the Pacific and one can apparently see the Humpback Whales as they migrate North. Unfortunately, I didn’t see any but there are better opportunities apparently further North – maybe Fraser Island.

This one's for you Jimmy - the blighter was less than 10m from me!
