Well, I've enjoyed reading other peoples stories as they travelled on their own trips of a lifetime and I wanted to do the same - so hope you enjoy the trip as I try and share through my eyes!

Sunday

Australia Zoo - Wednesday 28th June 2006 - aww yeah!

Crikey mate - croc's rule!

Oh yes, it has to be done and you saw it here first! The Captain goes to meet Australia's most famous export!! Bex had kindly offered to take a day off work and we would savour some of Queenslands attractions. First on the list was 'Dreamworld' on the Gold Coast but due to the fact that it was school holidays, the idea sadly got binned. However, every cloud and all that... and it was off to Australia zoo. Luckily, Bex and Emma have a house just North of Brissy in a place called Morayfield, so I caught the train up there to meet Bex for about 6.30pm. Now, how cool is that? Bex and Emma had prepared a proper roast dinner - stars! Bloody lovely it was too. Unfortunately, Emma's boyfriend's Grandmother was teminally ill in hospital and Emma had to leave to be with him, so after dinner, Bex and I were left to drink the 2 bottles of red and bottle of port that was handy!! It was a lovely evening as Bex showed me some of the art work she'd drawn at university, including a very striking piece based on some massacres reported in the news that had happened in SE Asia around the time of her Degree. I have to say Bex, you have a lot of skill, I loved the drawings. Also, she showed me her 'scrap book', which again is a piece of art and is quite a big business here in Oz. Emma, she showed me yours as well - bless!! The thing that struck me was how different the styles and presentation were - both excellent but very diverse. Bex also has a more than passing interest in making her own jewellry and had some lovely, what I would call gothic style (like I know what the fack I'm talking about!!), necklaces. It reminded me of Lisa's mate Sam, who has also done her own jewellry and sells it too. There are some very creative people about. Most of all though, I was flattered and priviliged to know that someone felt they could share such personal stuff! Great.

Next day, with a slightly sore head, we mooched up to see Steve! In fact, the zoo staff were quite coy about whether he'd be there or not, which isn't surprising I guess, but I didn't mind, Australia Zoo is definitely worth a visit. In fact, I didn't know that this was where 'Harriet', the Galapagos Tortoise collected by none other than Charles Darwin was housed. It gave me a few moments of reflection to think I'd be seeing and meeting another living being that connected me to the founder of modern evolutionary theory - I'm a Darwinist before Creationist - so you can inagine my feelings when it turned out that Harriet joined Mr Darwin only 2 days before. Gutted!

God bless ya Harriet (I'm not really a creationist - but I'll hedge the bets! ;-0))

The zoo really is a special as it's designed to get you as close to the animals as possible in their natural habitat. As a result, you can walk through the Aviary's, koala areas, kangaroo sanctuary and there are staff walking around with animals that you can stroke or at least see. Great for kids and as I'm just a big kid...

Look at this blighter! The Captain meets Ali!

I was also well impressed with the shows they put on in the Amphitheatre where for the bird show, the birds fly around the area from keeper to keeper.

The tiger show was cool but we all wanted to see the crocs - ideally ripping one of the trainers arms from his socket for bein g too slow - what is it with human nature and Amphitheatres? First though we had to endure a nauseating show by Steve's daughter, Bindi, which was some song and dance routine and looked very contrived. I broke for a coffee!

This one's for you Jimmy - the weather cleared and I bought a bag of feed for the 'Roo's - they must be the best fed vermin in Oz! Anyway, this one liked me!

On our way out - I finally got to meet 'The Man'. Crikey mate! Actually, we saw him, but he was scooting along with his Son and didn't stop - bastard!! Nah, just kidding, great day out - great company too. Thanks Bex. xxx
