Heading to Lennox...
FRIDAY 16 JUNE
Yup – it’s the ‘Big Prawn’ of Ballina – cue: ‘Don’t come the raw Prawn with me sonny…’!!
So, poor old Sam, having to put up with me at Ben’s stag do and what not – he still kindly allowed me to stay with him in Lennox Heads – nice guy! Actually, the weather had been atrocious for the past few nights and the van wasn’t coping too well with the torrential downpour – so I was more than happy to decamp to a warm and dry house!!
Met Sam at the Lennox Hotel, which is his local – the weird thing is that I’d stayed at Lennox Heads Caravan Park both on my way North to Bris-Vegas to fly out to Thailand and also on the way back – but had never ventured into the boozer – now if I had, I’d’ve probably met Sam!! But for the grace of god….
Scooting in at 5 and it’s already jumping – I do love the Friday night vibe in places – a colleague once coined the phrase ‘weekend warrior’ and he’s so right!! A couple of scoops before getting off to Sam’s to get the glad rags on – the current plans being to head into Byron after a few at the Lennox Hotel! Apparently, the bar ‘Cheeky Monkeys’ in Byron is not to be missed…. Sam’s digs are pretty cool, right in the centre of Lennox – so handily situated – of course, Lennox is only about 100 metres long, so it’s a moot point really!!
In the actual event, we ended up staying in Lennox, which was fine because the band on was pretty fucking good, some great covers and the place is jumping. One of the things I do love here is that when a tune comes on: ‘Place yr Hands’, or ‘Centrefold’, everyone in the joint starts jumping about and acting like lunatics – I feel right at home!! Anyway, the place is going off so we decide to stay. In the event, I meet quite a few cool and interesting people – Sam seems to know everyone here – especially the chix – sly old dog!!
The only bummer is that the boozer closes at midnight, but Sam gets the rescue sorted out with a crate of beers over the counter after hours and so it’s back to Sam’s to drink ourselves stupid – as you can see from the photo’s.
This is Sally and her mate who we got chatting to at the pub - I had a useful mnemonic for remembering her name - but it obviously didn't work - oh wait - mint cake - Kendall, that was it!
One thing, Sam’s flat mate is really into crystals, so the flat has been inundated by them – but they do add a certain ambience. Showing my tigerstone, the lass gets a book out for me to read. The Tigerstone is ideal for men, travelling and allows the wearer to be more centred as it’s good for the ‘middle chakra’. I guess that’s good for my liver then!! Once more Amanda – thanks sweetheart – it’s a lovely and thoughtful gift – xxx. I’m thinking of getting the stone mounted so that I can wear it around my neck but think I’ll save that for Byron. There’s bound to be some new age store therewith a Hippy chic who can sort me out! With the necklace I mean!!
SATURDAY 17 JUNE
Saturday we promised ourselves that we’d go surfing but the weather was atrocious – it’s cold and absolutely pissing it down, so the day was spent watching some Dvd’s, which was actually pretty cool – except that my ripped copy of MI:3 didn’t seem to work too well. There’s always one!
This is Andy - he was in Lennox for work - top guy - really interesting and what he didn't know about music wasn't worth knowing!!
The evening was a repeat of last night, with the added bonus of the Cook Cup match. I was in two minds about wearing the England shirt considering how poorly we played last week and in the event, I made the right choice by not wearing it as we were once again a fucking embarrassment – we’re turning into the cricket team – wankers.
The band here were another pretty good outfit, with the lead singer a pretty laconic middle-aged rocker type! They were part way through ‘Jailbreak’ by ACDC when I remarked to Sam that they could do with a bit more showmanship. I reckon the singer must’ve heard me because at that moment he decided to play the guitar behind his head!! I’ll shut up then!
SUNDAY 18th JUNE
My first surfing lesson!! Sam and I nipped out for half an hour before brekkie for a quick balloon about. The sea was pretty calm, with some bigger breakers ‘out the back’!! I didn’t go out too far as I was having a few issues – namely, being too heavy for the board and sinking it!! That said, I did manage to stand up for about half a second! It’s actually quite hard work this surfing as you are effectively doing a push-up every time you try and get up to surf! I enjoyed it though and I’ll certainly take it up in Byron. The remainder of the day was nice and chilled – Sam’s got an excellent collection of music, so spent a couple of hours cutting a load of music onto the I of Pod. Cheers mate!
