Well, I've enjoyed reading other peoples stories as they travelled on their own trips of a lifetime and I wanted to do the same - so hope you enjoy the trip as I try and share through my eyes!

Moreton Island

Saturday 8th July

So without realising it would happen, I was back in Brissy for a night to depart from there for Moreton Island. In the end, it was only a day trip, but still great fun.

Dolphins and Dugongs in the crystal blue water were very enticing but it turns out that the sea is quite lethal – rips and sharks being the main issue, especially with the whales moving North around now – so not a time to be swimming. That said, when we had the chance to go boom netting, I jumped at it! This is basically hanging off a net on the back of the boat and getting dragged along – but still, no sharks!!

The snorkelling area is amazing – there are about 12 wrecks sunk in the area and forming their own little ecology which we mooched around and snorkelled. I found a few interesting nooks and crannies but nothing massively interesting. Still, the swim was great and all in all, it made me even more excited about getting onto Fraser, which had a lot more to offer, being twice the size. It’s amazing though, considering it’s a sand island, how much greenery there was – there are some hardy tree’s in Oz! Apparently also, Moreton is now back to being an original habitat following 30 years of trapping of cats, rats and feral pigs – poor blighters!

The Island is named after a guy who was shipwrecked here and lived on the island for a while before being rescued. 2 others who attempted the swim to the mainland didn’t make it, presumably becoming part of the food chain on the way! And no-one remembers their names – harsh world!
