Kununurra to Broome
Monday 2nd October – Thursday 5th October
Twister...!
So after our most excellent adventure, we left for Broome after a brief R&R at Kununurra – we were whacked! Leaving early Tuesday, the first thing that overtook us on the road were more Whirlie whirlies! The scene looked like the one from ‘The Day after Tomorrow’, where the 4 or 5 twisters were touching down in the film. Obviously, these weren’t as big, or powerful and I didn’t feel like Bill Hicks as we tried to chase one, but eventually we got our wish and managed to drive through one. This particular sucker was that vicious, it contained a coke can, which I thought was rather cool! These things are weird, springing seemingly anywhere and disappearing just as quickly. Seeing as I was now a ‘Veteran’, these were just fun and the other main highlight was taking down a roadtrain – waytago Cap’n! That said, I was still slightly traumatised by this little thing on the river even though it was so tiny, I’ve a new healthy respect for Mother Nature!
Our first port of call was Hall’s Creek which we were a little apprehensive about. Firstly, it’s near Wolfe Creek and secondly, 2 girls in Darwin were telling us about their trip via Hall’s Creek where they were camping. They owned a Ford Falcon and after spending a night on the beer, at the campsite, with some fellow travellers, retired to a booze-induced kip. The following morning, they packed up and started the car, but there was no response. One of the guys they were boozing with the night before was a Mechanic, so popped the hood to find…. No engine! Apparently, someone had driven in, put a frame over the engine, disconnected it and lifted it out – all without detection. I was pretty incredulous as they would’ve had to winch it out and even a hand ratchet would make a lot of noise! That said, I’d seen the girls out drinking in Darwin, so maybe they did sleep through it, but aside from the Aboriginals getting drunk and caterwauling all night it wasn’t so bad!
Luckily the night passed without peril and we mooched off the next morning stopping at Wolfe Creek the next day…..
But sadly lads and ladies, the road to Wolfe Creek is 4WD only and Harriet sadly wasn’t up to it! BUT, I’ll do it one day! We tried the Wolfe Creek turnoff but alas it was too rough and I grounded out Harriet a couple of times – with serious repercussions as it transpired!! Still, we made it to Broome with no real issues.

I just LOVED this sign - look how close everything is... And these are ALL the towns on this road, not 'merely' the larger ones!!
