The shipwreck was the highlight of the morning. The ‘Maheno’ was a top class passenger liner that used to ply the route between Sydney and Auckland for top dollar paying punters before being sold to Japan for scrap. It was blown ashore in 1935 by a cyclone and subsequently abandoned. The Australian Govmint at the time, charged the Japs for leaving the wreck there – effectively charging them twice! I imagined standing on the beach hearing that story that the Nips couldn’t wait to overrun Oz 6 years later! The best thing though - and I loved this story - was that the RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force) used the ship as a target for bombing practice. In their enthusiasm, they dropped over 300 bombs on the wreck and hit it…….twice! A success rate of less than 1%. I loved that! I hope they’ve improved since then, or maybe that was why they needed the practise!
2 times in 300. Love it!
